Summer Is Finally Here!

It’s been a very challenging semester. The shutdown of face-to-face classroom instruction caused no end of headaches, compromises in the quality of teaching, and some serious doubts about tests and grading. I just finished grading 55 final exams in one […]

Qln Prestige Three Loudspeaker | Review

Part-Time Audiophile

By Dave McNair Photos by Eric Franklin Shook Last November at the 2019 Capital Audio Fest, I had a fantastic time hearing numerous amazing systems and meeting some great folks. One of the many rooms I enjoyed was hosted by Well Pleased AV and consisted of an Innuos music server, Vinnie Rossi integrated amp, and a pair of attractive yet modest looking Qln Prestige Three speakers. After hearing about thirty seconds of music we glanced at each other with that look that said, “There is something really special going on here.” I think I mumbled something like “These are perfect.” Fast forward a few months. Mark Sossa, the American distribution partner for Qln, was extraordinarily kind enough to drive a pair down from northern Virginia to my place in North Carolina. I met him at Ember Audio + Design so owner Chris Livengood could have a quick demo before setting them up at my place for more extended listening. It was great to hear them in a large and acoustically very different room than my home listening space. [...]

Find an Expert, Lose the Sales Pitch!

Having been involved in high-end audio for many years as an audio engineer, record producer, writer, and having garnered a reputation as somewhat of a contrarian when it comes to some well-established norms in our hobby, I receive a fair […]

VPI Industries, Wilson Audio, Qobuz, and hope for humanity

Part-Time Audiophile

With COVID-19, we are living in unprecedented times. We will (hopefully) return to (a new) normal in the coming months, but how businesses respond to today will define their legacy for years to come. Speaking personally, it gives us hope when we see companies putting their employees and others first, and also leveraging their resources to support their local community in times of need. Two industry stalwarts, VPI Industries and Wilson Audio have taken this to heart, and our hope is that their efforts inspire others to do whatever they can. From Turntables to supporting local healthcare VPI Cleaning Fluid to Hand Sanitizer VPI Industries was able to keep their manufacturing facility in New Jersey open during the COVID lock-down since they were considered an “essential service”. Mat Weisfeld, President of VPI Industries, wanted to use this opportunity to do work that was “essential” to help his local community. It started as an idle comment. Weisfeld was cruising his Facebook feed and discovered someone suggesting they use their VPI recording cleaning fluid as a replacement for hand sanitizer. Funny, but as he thought about it, he thought, “If they could make cleaning fluid, why couldn’t they make sanitizer?” He worked with their [...]
