McIntosh Announces MX100 A/V Processor and MI347 7-Channel Amplifier

BINGHAMTON, NY — “I can’t believe it’s not butter.” I say things like that from time to time, thinking I’m half-way funny. But when I first experienced a full-bore McIntosh home theater demonstration, I truly said it to our host that evening with all seriousness. Backtracking, I’m from the American south where every food recipe begins with 1/2 a pound of the solid dairy stuff. At the time, I, still young-ish and new to the hobby as it sits from a high-end consumer aspect, I thought I’d never be able to fit, much less afford, a true McIntosh home theater system. Now, with the release of the newly announced streamlined home theater front-end centerpiece and 7-channel amplifier, I’ve got that fit problem squarely under control. Now just to get that checkbook in some sort of balance. Photos and Press Release below. Enjoy! Press Release McIntosh Announces MX100 A/V Processor and MI347 7-Channel Amplifier Streamlined, Rack Mountable McIntosh Home Theater Performance delivers an Edge-Of-Your-Seat Audio Experience McIntosh, the global leader in prestigious home entertainment and ultimate-quality audio for over 70 years, is proud to introduce two more exciting products: the MX100 A/V Processor and MI347 7-Channel Amplifier. McIntosh Announces MA12000 Hybrid Integrated Amplifier

BINGHAMTON, NY (PTA) — Our own Marc Phillips shot me an email yesterday morning with a heads up on the new ‘behemoth sized‘ integrated amplifier launching from McIntosh Labs. Along with the forwarded technical info and photos, a simple message from Marc that read, “I wanna review this so hard.” Having not even opened the first document or cracked the seal on any of the photos, I knew this was something serious. I immediately reached out to fellow staffer and columnist Nan Pincus for her reaction to the new 350-Watt MA12000 Hybrid Integrated from McIntosh Labs, as she had recently published a fantastic interview (found here) with McIntosh Labs President & CEO Charlie Randall, where she sought his perspective on the turntable side of hi-fi, and how McIntosh connects with consumers. Nan’s initial unbridled reaction to the sheer size of the MA12000: “A mad scientist made a microwave that forgot it was a microwave and self-actualized its way into being an integrated amplifier.” Upon seeing just a picture along with some brief details of the new MA12000 Integrated, reviewer and columnist Dave McNair had this to say: “Wow! I wanna get one, and I’ve never lusted over McIntosh before.” Given [...]

Bryston Introduces all-new BR-20 Preamplifier

PETERBOROUGH, ONTARIO (PTA) — Every definition of the word honor is at play here. Brian Russell was the President of Bryston, and a well known figure in hi-fi for several decades. His work at the helm of Bryston placed the company and subsequently himself into a position of high esteem among competitors and peers. Russell passed away last month, and with his passing comes mourning throughout the industry. The Bryston team chose to honor Russell in a fitting way with the renaming of a recently scheduled-to-release product. If you’re a fan or follower of the Bryston product story, you’ll be familiar with Bryston preamplifiers having he prefix BP in the model number. For the new preamplifier, it was a fitting tribute to break with tradition and bestow the new analog preamplifier with a BR in observance of their fallen leader. Press Release Below Bryston Introduces the BR-20 Preamplifier The BR-20 breaks new ground, merging Bryston’s brand new, best-ever analog preamplifier with our award-winning DAC and bit-perfect high-resolution streaming capability all into a single chassis Music enthusiasts can connect up to 14 analog and digital source components plus enjoy built-in high-resolution streaming from Qobuz, Tidal, and access to their own music [...]

HIFIMAN debuts TWS800 True Wireless® Earbuds, with Onboard Amplifiers and Audiophile Grade Drivers

BELLMORE, NY (PTA) — At Canjam Socal 2019 in Invine, California, I had the pleasure of reconnecting with Adam Sohmer and a chance to preview the then new TWS600 ($199 USD) wireless earphones from HIFIMAN which featured a new True Wireless® technology. The excitement surrounding this new technology was that it finally allowed for better sound and greater distances between the earphones and music source. This was especially useful news for gym-rats like myself and stationary runners who preferred not to have their DAP or phone attached at the hip despite said competitors’  “wireless” earphones of the day still seeming to be still lacking in practical wireless range. The True Wireless® technology debuted by HIFIMAN then was a godsend for earbud users, and now with the new TWS800 ($299 USD) earbuds debuting this week, we’re even more excited as the extended range this series of earbuds is known for now receives a big dose of high-end audiophile sound to boot. More information on the TWS800’s newly designed drivers and electronics can be found in the enclosed press release below. Enjoy! HIFIMAN Debuts TWS800 True Wireless® Earbud, With Onboard Amplifier and Audiophile-grade Drivers New Bluetooth 5.0 Earbud Features High-end Output, Rugged [...]

BREAKING: The Bristol Hi-Fi Show Cancelled for 2021, Going Virtual Maybe?

BRISTOL UK (PTA) — In a post made to social media, the Bristol Hi-Fi Show has announced the cancellation of their in-person event that was to be held in the last weekend of February of 2021, in the city of Bristol, UK. The event was cancelled due to the lingering concerns surrounding the Coronavirus pandemic, public health, and travel safey. As a possible solution, the Bristol Hi-Fi Show organizers are working to keep options open as hosting a virtual hi-fi event may be the best course of action. This remains a developing story. Stay tuned for updates. The Bristol Hi-Fi Show celebrates its 34th year in 2021. The show is organized by Audio T (a UK dealer) in association with What Hi-Fi? (a UK publication) and is the largest and longest running consumer home audio show in the UK. From the Bristol Hi-Fi Show Facebook Page “Due to the uncertainty surrounding the ongoing pandemic, we have made the difficult decision not to host the Bristol Show 2021. We are currently looking at options to host a virtual event, so watch this space!”

Now Listen Here “Micro-Show” Wrap-Up | Now Listen Here 2020

The Now Listen Here (a Tenacious Sound company) micro-show listening event was held at the Hyatt House Hotel in King of Prussia, PA. An event location with quick access to main highways, decent shopping, and open restaurants. Which made for easy day-travel to the event and allowed one to find other things to do if audiophilia wasn’t exactly their idea of a good time. As for the space inside the hotel, the NLH event was perfectly distanced away from the main lobby of the hotel on the lower level grounds, with adequate space for sprawling out, access to fresh air, and dedicated facilities. Reporting by Eric Franklin Shook A few days after the show I reached out to Jessica Sherrick of Now Listen Here to ask a few questions and get a few takes on the first ever pandemic micro-show as she distinctly had a bird’s eye view of what was going on (and going down) all weekend. As just a press member, I could tell that the Now Listen Here micro-show was well-attended despite the slow start with Saturday’s early morning rain. Jessica Sherrick tells me that “Sunday was nearly a 100% in attendance from registered show attendees, and [...]

Fyne Audio, Chord Electronics, VPI, Sonore, Transparent Cable, and a Whole Lotta Love | Now Listen Here 2020

The Philadelphia Story We’re on the road to Philly for the Now Listen Here event, racking up the highway miles, and taking in Nan’s hand selected road trip playlist. We are discussing the meaning of the playlist, I think to decode a secret message that Nan is trying to send via music. We also discuss how to divvy up our room assignments. The thing is this, the NLH “micro-show” is essentially just a two room event if you were to only register yourself to the active displays. There is a third room with various NLH wares open as a static display for closer inspections and for those abiding to the safe social distancing mandated by NLH show organizers Shayne Tenace, and Aaron and Jessica Sherrick. Reporting by Eric Franklin Shook Going in to this event, I was aware of the differences of each exhibit’s system. Previously at Capital Audio Fest 2019 I had gotten my fill of both Joseph Audio (at the time with Doshi Electronics) with Jeff Joseph and Fyne Audio under the care of Shayne Tenace and his two companies Tenacious Sound, and partner store Now Listen Here. Upon arriving at the show late Friday night we found [...]
